Compact AI recycling robots with item-level recovery data.

Glacier builds AI-powered robots specifically for materials recovery facilities, plus dashboards that give brands item-level visibility into how packaging is sorted. The San Francisco company was co-founded in 2019 by CEO Rebecca Hu-Thrams and CTO Areeb Malik (formerly Meta). Robots are designed for compact footprints on existing lines and are trained on recycling-line imagery rather than generic warehouse vision.
Deployments cited in press include Recology’s King County MRF in Seattle and facilities in California, Chicago, Detroit, Phoenix and Los Angeles. Brand work includes Colgate-Palmolive tracking toothpaste-tube recovery. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund is an investor. The stated mission is that nothing valuable should end up in landfill.
Glacier’s impact is recovered tons plus a design feedback loop. Robots pick film, flexibles, fibre, OCC, containers and metals that human pickers or legacy equipment miss, which improves bale value and diversion. Brand Intelligence products sell the same vision as evidence for whether a package is actually recognised in mixed streams—an answer EPR and corporate recycling claims increasingly require.
Hardware is sold on MRF ROI (throughput without extra headcount, contamination cuts, worker safety) rather than as a civic smart-city gadget.
* Founded 2019 in San Francisco by Rebecca Hu-Thrams and Areeb Malik
* $16M Series A extension in April 2025 led by Ecosystem Integrity Fund; Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, NEA, AlleyCorp and others participated
* About $33.2M total funding reported after that extension (company/press profiles)
* Robots cited at up to 45 picks per minute in facility photography/press
* Recology King County fleet deployment announced with the 2025 round
* TIME Best Inventions 2025 (Glacier robots)
* Brand intelligence used with CPG partners such as Colgate-Palmolive
MRF-native robots
Cells are built for dirty, high-speed recycling belts rather than clean warehouse SKUs.
Compact install
Smaller footprints are meant to drop into working plants without a full line rebuild.
Brand intelligence
Item-level data shows CPG teams whether packaging is recognised and recovered in the field.
Climate-tech backing
Investors include Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, NEA and Ecosystem Integrity Fund.
