Meet Unicorn Goods, The World’s Largest Ethical Vegan Catalog

You that you can make small changes that will add up over time. Here’s how I did it. I initially became vegetarian for environmental reasons after seeing the movie Food Inc. As an environmentalist, I couldn’t eat meat anymore without feeling like a hypocrite.

Animal agriculture one of the worst polluting industries for the environment, emitting more carbon that the entire transportation industry combined, and responsible for clearcutting irreplaceable rainforests like the Brazilian Amazon. It’s impossible to consider yourself an environmentalist if you eat meat, eggs, or dairy.

From being a vegetarian, it was a gradual process learning how animals are treated in general in the agriculture industry, all the way down to dairy cows and laying hens. The dairy industry is part of the veal industry, and just what happens to all of those roosters who can’t lay eggs, anyway? On top of the humane aspects, the animal agriculture industry is also incredibly cruel to the people who work in it, and Human Rights Watch calls it one of the worst perpetrators of human rights violations.

When I finally became fully vegan, I did it with my wardrobe first. Leather is part of the animal agriculture industry, too, in addition to wool, fur, down, and silk. I tried to buy a pair of non-leather shoes that looked good and would last a long time, and it took me six months of scouring the Internet. I set out with my cofounder to make vegan shopping easier with Unicorn Goods.
