Retirement planning is one of the most ubiquitous types of investing. There’s a good chance that you and lots of people you know have a 401(k) or similar retirement plan because it just makes good financial sense. Retirement planning is making your money “work for you.”
But, as is true in so many systems, there’s a dark side to retirement planning. If your retirement plan has your money invested in corrupt businesses or industries, you could be inadvertently funding the further destruction of the planet or harm to communities and workers.
This week, we had a chance to chat with investing experts about ethical retirement planning and the options employers and employees have to pursue ethical options.
If you have a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), congratulations: You’re an investor. But do you know what you’re invested in? ESG investing (“ESG” stands for environmental, social, and governance) offers new layers of information to financial managers as well as investors — information about how companies are prioritizing the environment, communities, workers, and ethical business practices. We spoke with two experts about the current ESG investing landscape, what it currently has to offer investors, and how employers and employees can make ESG investing part of their retirement plans.
