Tab for a Cause: Turning Everyday Browsing into Dollars for Nonprofits

The idea that doing good should be simple is not new. The problem is the world rarely makes it simple. That is where Tab for a Cause comes in. What started as a clever college experiment has grown into one of the most accessible digital giving tools on the internet.

With nothing more than an internet connection and the habit of opening new browser tabs, millions of people have helped raise real dollars for causes that matter.

Under the leadership of co founder and CEO Alex Groth, the company has pushed a straightforward idea into a global engine for everyday generosity.

The platform has already helped raise two million dollars for nonprofit partners, all without asking users for a single cent.

It turns a routine digital behavior into a steady source of funding for environmental, health, education, and animal welfare efforts around the world.

Below, Alex walks through the origin story, the mission, how the business works, and what tools power the team behind it.

Q&A with Alex Groth, Co founder and CEO of Tab for a Cause

What was the lightbulb moment that sparked your company?

Alex: Tab for a Cause started when we were in college and opening hundreds of new tabs every day. We had seen through YouTube that online ads were generating real revenue, and at that time the new tab page was just a blank white screen.

We thought it would be interesting to place a few ads on that page and send the revenue to charity.

That simple idea grew into what is now Tab for a Cause.

What is your company’s mission and vision?

Alex: We want to make it extremely easy for anyone to raise money for a cause they care about. Since our service is free and only requires an internet connection, almost anyone can support nonprofits through our apps.

As people open tabs, search online, and shop, they turn giving into a daily habit.

Our long term goal is to grow the overall pie for philanthropy. We do this by bringing in people who may not have time or money to donate, and by redirecting advertising budgets that would never have reached nonprofits otherwise.

How does your company create positive impact?

Alex: Our community has raised two million dollars for nonprofits at no cost to the user. It has become a new income stream for our partners and a gateway to deeper social action for our users.

The money raised has funded tree planting, global health programs, clean water access, animal welfare efforts, and more.

What is your business model?

Alex: We generate revenue through ads across our products. Tab for a Cause uses display ads, Search for a Cause uses search ads, and Shop for a Cause uses affiliate links. At least thirty percent of our gross revenue goes directly to nonprofits. The rest covers operating costs and helps us invest in continued growth.

How have you funded the company so far?

Alex: We raised a small amount of venture capital early on. Over time we have also received grants and loans to support product development and marketing. Most of our operations today are supported by the revenue the platform generates.

What tools does your team rely on?

Alex: We use Figma, Slack, Metabase, Mailjet, AWS, Canva, Gusto, and Carta to run the company day to day.
