Water.org is a global nonprofit co-founded in 2009 by Gary White and Matt Damon that brings access to safe water and sanitation to families in developing countries through affordable financing rather than charity alone. The organization pioneered the WaterCredit model, microfinance programs that help families obtain small loans to install household taps, toilets, and water connections, unlocking solutions at a scale that grant-based aid alone cannot reach.
Water.org partners with local financial institutions, utilities, and governments across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to develop and scale WaterCredit programs, with repaid loans recycled to reach more households over time. The approach has helped more than 68 million people access safe water or sanitation, creating a sustainable capital model for one of the world's most persistent development challenges, and proving that the world's poor are willing and able to participate in financing their own solutions when given the opportunity.
