Learning Equality is a San Diego nonprofit that develops Kolibri, a free, open-source learning platform built for communities without dependable internet access. The organization grew from Jamie Alexandre’s 2012 Raspberry Pi prototype for an offline Khan Academy experience and was incorporated in April 2013 by Alexandre, Richard Tibbles, and Liz Vu. KA Lite was its first product; Kolibri is its current ecosystem.
Kolibri runs on low-cost and legacy hardware, distributes content over local networks, and can transfer lessons through USB drives or an Android app. Teachers can assign lessons and quizzes and monitor progress through a coach dashboard, while curriculum teams use Kolibri Studio to organize open educational resources around local standards. The content library includes materials in more than 173 languages.
Learning Equality supports independent installations as well as deeper programs delivered with governments, UN agencies, and NGOs. Its EdTech Toolkit and community forum address the implementation work surrounding the software, including teacher preparation, blended-learning practices, hardware planning, and curriculum alignment.
Learning Equality separates access to digital learning from continuous connectivity. A local device can host Kolibri for nearby learners, allowing schools and community programs to distribute lessons and record progress offline. This architecture can extend digital resources to settings where bandwidth, device age, or connectivity costs make conventional web platforms impractical.
The software alone does not determine educational outcomes. Learning Equality combines an open platform with implementation guidance and partnerships because results depend on educator training, appropriate hardware, relevant content, and alignment with local curricula. Installations and estimated learner reach show adoption; evidence of learning gains must be assessed within each individual program and context.
Learning Equality reports Kolibri installations in more than 220 countries and territories and learning materials in over 173 languages. Fast Forward estimates that the organization has reached 15 million people, while co-founder Jamie Alexandre has separately described its platforms as reaching more than 10 million learners.
MIT Solve reported 31 interface languages and more than 159,000 learning materials in 2022. Studies in particular programs have reported educational gains, but these findings are context-specific; the 10–15 million reach range should not be treated as a single independently audited count.
