Climeworks is a Swiss climate-tech company pioneering direct air capture (DAC), machines that filter carbon dioxide directly from ambient air so it can be permanently stored underground or used in durable products. Founded in 2009 as an ETH Zurich spin-off by engineers Jan Wurzbacher and Christoph Gebald, the company set out to make high-quality carbon removal real at commercial scale.
Climeworks builds modular DAC plants and pairs capture with geologic storage partners such as Carbfix in Iceland, mineralizing CO₂ in basalt rock for permanent sequestration. Flagship facilities include Orca and Mammoth near Hellisheiði, Iceland, designed to demonstrate and scale the full capture-to-storage chain with third-party verification.
Beyond operating its own plants, Climeworks offers carbon removal solutions that help companies and governments buy permanent, additional, and measurable removals, a critical complement to deep emissions cuts on the path to net zero.
Climeworks creates impact by physically removing CO₂ already in the atmosphere and locking it away for the long term. Revenue comes from selling verified carbon removal services to enterprises and individuals; capital funds next-generation plants that drive down cost per ton. Permanence, additionality, and independent verification are core to the product — not optional attributes.
Raised roughly $980M+ in equity funding. Mammoth DAC plant in Iceland designed for up to ~36,000 tons of CO₂ capture capacity per year; Orca was the world’s first commercial DAC+storage facility. Hundreds of corporate and individual buyers purchase verified removals.
Permanent Removal
Captures CO₂ from ambient air and stores it underground via mineralization — not temporary offsets.
Verified Quality
Third-party verification of net carbon dioxide removal so buyers can trust what they purchase.
Commercial Scale
Operating DAC plants such as Orca and Mammoth prove the full capture-to-storage chain in the field.
Enterprise Solutions
Helps companies buy high-integrity engineered carbon removals as part of net-zero strategies.
