From the Amazon to Modern Spaces: The Story Behind Anduba’s Sustainable Wallcoverings

Anduba is redefining the role of design by merging sustainability, cultural preservation, and contemporary aesthetics.

Founded by Flavia Pereira, the company partners with Indigenous artists and transforms recycled materials into sustainable wallcoverings that are PVC-free and Red List Free.

The goal is to show that design can move beyond decoration to become a vehicle for cultural storytelling, environmental responsibility, and human connection.

Born in the Brazilian Amazon and armed with more than 20 years of business experience, Flavia was inspired to launch Anduba after reconnecting with the values of Indigenous communities, simplicity, sustainability, and community.

Flavia Pereira, Founder of Anduba

Today, Anduba works with designers, architects, and conscious consumers to bring ancestral wisdom into modern spaces while creating measurable impact for people and the planet.

In this interview, Flavia shares the origin story of Anduba, the mission driving the company forward, and how sustainable design can influence the way we live and interact with our environment.

What was the lightbulb moment that led you to start Anduba?

I was born in the Brazilian Amazon but left at age two. In my 40s, I returned and was struck by how Indigenous communities live with fewer possessions but a deep richness of connection to nature and each other.

That contrast revealed what our society has been craving: sustainability, community, and meaning.

With 20+ years of business experience, I created Anduba to bring those values forward — evolving from selling Indigenous art to partnering with artists to create sustainable wallcoverings.

What is Anduba’s mission and vision?

Anduba’s mission is to infuse contemporary spaces with ancestral beauty and wisdom while making a positive impact for people and the planet.

We partner with Indigenous artists—so far from Brazil, Mexico, and the U.S.—paying them double the industry-standard licensing fee, and transform recycled plastic bottles into sustainable wallcoverings that are PVC-free and Red List Free.

Our vision is to show that design can be more than decoration: it can preserve culture, spark connection, and influence how we see ourselves and exist in the world.

How does Anduba create positive impact?

Anduba creates positive impact across people, planet, and wellbeing. For people, we partner with Indigenous artists, paying double the industry-standard licensing fee and ensuring their cultural traditions and stories are celebrated in contemporary spaces.

For the planet, our wallcoverings are printed on a substrate that is PVC-free, Red List Free, and made with recycled plastic bottles—reducing waste, avoiding harmful chemicals, and lowering emissions.

For wellbeing, our designs are inspired by nature and rooted in cultural storytelling, bringing the benefits of biophilic design into everyday spaces. Surrounded by beauty and meaning, people experience environments that foster connection and balance.

What is the business model behind Anduba?

Anduba’s business model is rooted in creating meaningful spaces through sustainable wallcoverings. We partner with designers, architects, developers, and organizations who want to inspire connection, express their values, and create impact in contemporary spaces.

Partners can either purchase from our existing collection or commission bespoke wallcoverings tied to their project and location, designed by Indigenous artists from that region.

In addition, responding to strong interest from homeowners, we are testing the residential market with select patterns offered on a substrate better suited for homes—FSC-certified paper rather than recycled plastic bottles.

How have you funded the company so far?

Anduba has been fully bootstrapped to date.

Along the way, we’ve benefited from the generosity of industry leaders who have offered valuable advice and connections, helping us shorten the path to scalability without outside funding.

Remaining independent has allowed us to stay true to our mission and maintain the freedom to create the impact we envision.

What tools help you run the company?

We keep it simple. As a small company, we haven’t needed an overly complex tech stack—just the right tools to stay efficient and focused.

We use Shopify to manage our website and e-commerce, QuickBooks for accounting, and the Google Workspace suite for day-to-day operations and collaboration.

For design and marketing, we rely on Photoshop and Canva, which allow us to create professional materials quickly and cost-effectively.
